A family garden in Rotterdam I designed in 2020. The garden feels like an open park because of the low-perennial ‘fence’ and connection with the surrounding gardens. Makes me wonder why we have our gardens fenced in the first place… It doesnt help the hedgehogs and isn’t it also much better for human connection to open up our outdoor spaces..?

Coming year we will be finetuning this garden more and more; adding more flowers, choosing which ‘weeds’ are worth keeping for the fauna, designing the backside of the garden, adding bulbs.

Organic matter Matters!

To invite a more spacious feeling in the garden we have been pruning a lot lately. The pruned material was way more than could be fitted in our compost heap. Instead of burning (which is often done but not good for the environment), we decided to mulch it up and spread the mulch on the plantbeds. We had such great help from @bournechippy, who came to the garden with a huge chipper to chip it up 🙂

Benefits of Mulching:
- helps soil retain water
- surpresses weeds
- provides nutrients
& improves soils organic matter!

Nature was full of pink & purples today 💜
I love finding suprises in the garden, but a purple pond…. Wow! The pond coloured because of a purple sulphur bacteria and luckily it’s not harmful for the frogs 🙂

Coming home to a flowering Loquat is a dream. With beautiful tropical evergreen foliage & the most fragrant flowers which attract hundreds of bees this is for sure one of my favorite trees! In march/april this beauty will be full of delicious fruits 🫶🏼

AUTUMN celebration with an ABUNDANCE of harvest this year. Gardening is a heavy, yet satisfying, job. To pick fruits at the end of the day is really the cherry on top of the cake.

Figs, strawberry guava, pomegranade, dragonfruits, kaki, kumquat, limequat, avocados, oranges, bananas, grapefruits, lemons & olives! Ow and also natal plum, something new I discovered and one of my favorites! Now waiting for the red berry of arbutus unedo♥️

The first picture you see in the video is a cocktail lemon called Citrus ‘hand of Budhha’. Do you see the fingers? 🙂

The happy face behind Fika 🙂

As a designer I spend my days observing nature and spaces. That is how I get inspired and get creative in my work. No matter where in the world, in a garden surrounded by plants and wildlife, I feel home.

In the last 5 years I’ve put a lot of love designing private gardens, community gardens and festival gardens. All with a focus on planting suited for its climate, people & wildlife.

With Fika I am continuing this journey, and who knows maybe we’ll meet eachother in your garden 🙂
